This 12-minute video takes you inside Russell Craig’s studio for a conversation with fellow artist Jesse Krimes. The two longtime peers and collaborators reflect on their creative journeys and the ways art has shaped their lives, both in confinement and beyond. Together, Craig and Krimes co-founded the Right of Return Fellowship in 2017, the first national initiative dedicated to supporting formerly incarcerated artists, which later grew into the Center for Art and Advocacy. Their partnership has created opportunities for dozens of artists to continue their practice, share their stories, and build supportive communities. In 2023, they also presented a two-person exhibition at Malin Gallery in Aspen, showcasing work that underscored the power of imagination and creativity to thrive under even the most constrained conditions. Here, in Craig’s New York studio, the conversation unfolds with honesty and warmth, touching on memory, discipline, and the sustaining role of art in their lives. More than a discussion of process, it’s a reflection on resilience, creativity, and the enduring possibility of hope.
The body of work discussed in this studio visit was featured in Russell Craig: Carceral Views, the Artist's monumental solo presentation at The Armory Show 2025, presented by Clubhouse Gallery.
