Clubhouse Gallery is delighted to announce a major solo presentation of the outsanding artist and activist Russell Craig (b. 1980, Philadelphia, USA) at the Armory Show 2025 in New York City. Craig is a New York-based, self-taught visual artist whose practice fuses raw materiality and large-scale portraiture to confront themes of systemic injustice, personal resilience, and the carceral state. Drawing from lived experiences in the foster care and prison systems, Craig transforms surfaces such as leather, canvas, and bureaucratic documents into searing meditations on trauma, identity, and transformation. His work often repurposes institutional forms—like mugshots or intake forms—into haunting visual narratives of survival and reclamation.
Craig’s work has been exhibited at leading institutions including MoMA PS1, the Ford Foundation Gallery, and the African American Museum in Philadelphia, among others. He has had solo exhibitions at Malin Gallery (NYC) and Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, as well as a two-person exhibition alongside long-time collaborator Jesse Krimes in Aspen, CO. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Bunker Artspace (Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection), and the private collections of Agnes Gund and Marie-Josée Kravis, among others.
