Clubhouse is thrilled to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by New York-based Mark Yang (b. 1994, Seoul, Korea). Yang is a contemporary painter whose practice explores the complexities of the human body and interpersonal relationships, focusing on gesture and physical tension. His dynamic compositions feature entangled figures that explore themes of vulnerability and connection, often drawing from his personal experiences and heritage.
The exhibition features three pairs of paintings—each set exploring variations on a shared visualand conceptual foundation. Rather than strict opposites or mirrored twins, these works function assiblings or companions, evolving from similar origins into distinct yet interconnected expressions. This duality highlights Yang’s continued investigation into the complexities of form, movement, andperception.
Yang’s work is deeply attuned to art historical lineages, drawing from a vast spectrum of influencesthat span multiple centuries. From Michelangelo’s sculptural musculature and monumental compositions to Picasso’s fractured forms and Cubist deconstructions to John Chamberlain’s compressed, dynamic energy in three-dimensional space, Yang’s paintings synthesize these traditions into a wholly contemporary vision of the human figure. This engagement with history is especially evident in his recent Bellini-inspired works, which emerged following his 2024 visit to the Vincenzo Bellini Museum in Italy. There, he became fascinated by the Venetian master’s approachto composition, light, and the body, which now subtly informs his latest series. This influence manifests in Bellini VIII (2024-25) and Bellini IX (2025), two paintings that serve asconceptual opposites. Bellini VIII, the first painting Yang completed in his new Upstate New York studio, is marked by a vibrant and expressive use of color, reflecting the energy Yang felt in the newspace. In contrast, Bellini IX is characterized by agony and darkness, presenting a stark psychological counterpoint to its counterpart’s exuberance. These works illustrate Yang’s ability to channel historical references into paintings that oscillate between intensity and restraint.
Yang received a BFA from Art Center College of Design and an MFA from Columbia University. His solo exhibitions include shows at MASSIMODECARLO (Paris and Beijing), Various Small Fires (Los Angeles, Seoul), and Kasmin (New York), among others. His work is held in the collections ofthe Dallas Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art (Atlanta), the Institute of Contemporary Art (Miami), and the Mint Museum (Charlotte), among others.
